Today's discussion about America's history of Eugenics

Lauren asks:

What did you think of today's class discussion. I know the topic was a little out of the ordinary from what we usually talk about, but did you like it. Was it more interesting than other types of discussion? What did you like about it, what didn't you like about it? Also, what are your thoughts about forced sterilization and the rich vs the poor? Do you think society had anything to do with people being rich or poor, or do you think it was only their fault for the way their life turned out? Do you think sterilization was the right thing to do by the government?

Editor's note: Check out www.eugenicsarchive.org sponsored by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, America's former home for eugenics research in the early 20th Century. They have compiled an archive of thousands of documents that portray the chilling thoughts and psuedo-science that spawned the Holocaust.

I thought the Eugenics lesson was the most interesting of them all. I think highlighting the information on the sheet helped a lot! I don't think the poor should suffer because everyone has a different reason of being poor. I'm not sure if the rich block out people, like the poor, and really not care about them, it bothers me. Like I said in class, the rich is popular in my opinon and it sometimes gets to their head.
I think picking the genes/traits for humans is wrong, I think its weird, and just not human!
:) Interesting topic!

I really liked the discussion we had on eugenics. I found it very interesting and insightful. Not only did I like the topic of discussion, I really liked the way that we talked about it. Rather than just watching another boring movie and filling out a sheet, we got to interact and share our opinions on a much more personal level. Don't get me wrong sometimes watching the movies and taking notes is ok, but I thought the discussion was a nice, much-needed change of pace.

I think forced sterilization is very wrong. It should be the a personal and family decision. The fact that our government did that is very shocking to me. What shocks me more is that we never really heard anything about it. It was more hidden. I just hope that this stops and that the victims can try and find peace with themselves and carry on with a life as normal as possible.

I personally find the most shocking of topics to be the most inresting. I loved hearing about Eugenics. It's very intersting to learn the type of flaws our country has made in order to prevent repetition. Sterilization was one of the most horrible things ive heard about. Its almost like death in a way because it kills off all your chances for a continuation of the family tree. It was a very good topic to bring up, especially since eugenics is what led the germans to the final solution.
