Weight Problem in America?

Hey Excel-ers!
I was wondering, do you guys think (over) eating is a big issue in America? Do you feel a lot of America is overweight? What are some healthy ways to start a good lifestyle?

I just started Weight Watchers, and it's a really good plan and it's not hard either. There are plans to choose from and you get to eat what you want! It's great!

I think everyone should be happy and healthy at the same time. What do you guys think?
THANKS!
JOSH F. :)

I think that America is over weight because there are so many fast food places sround america and i think that those are one of the main causes of obsity. But then again i think that alot of america is too concerned with there weight so they become anorexic or balimic. A healthy lifestle is very important and people should be very aware of that. Weight watchers is a great source to help you loose weight, and i know many people that are on it. I know that it has really helped them, and made them have a healthier lifestyle.

Josh, I think this is a really interesting and important topic, as I have been on a diet of my own. I TRY to eat in moderation, and eat more or what I don't get enough of, like protein, or Vitamin C, etc. I feel that one of America's overriding problems is the fact that many people today are overweight or unhealthy, and aren't doing much to change it.
To me, an important thing to turn around is first raise the awareness to people. But after that, the people as individuals have to take it into their own hands to manage their weight and personal health. They have to experience the difference themselves, and the first step to achieving this is committment. Then, after holding off on the dessert the first few times, which is the hardest, and allowing time for some form of exercise, the dieting will become a lot easier. It just takes the will power after the first time.
The combination of regular exercise of some form and healthy eating habits will produce a synergy that will spread to others, influencing them to change, and in turn, can make a crack at pulling America off of the couch.

Hey Josh and everyone else!
The thing is that the whole problem is not what you eat, it’s how much of it you eat, how much exercise you do, and if you fulfill eat food group requirement for each day. I mean when we had to give up sweat and fatty foods for swimming, I still ate the same amount, but I lost weight purely because my fat intake was lowered. I think that Americans have not only began to eat worse foods, but they have gotten very lazy. I mean instead of walking half a mile to work, or down the driveway to get the mail, they take their car. Instead of eating a salad with chicken, tomatoes, cucumbers, ect., they drive to the local McDonalds, and super-size it. Instead of doing a workout during the day, they watch TV with popcorn. Instead of eating a fruit salad for dessert, they eat half of a pint of ice cream, with chocolate cake. I mean I could go on for hours.

My main point is that those diets such as weight watchers may say that their technology is the one and only that actually works. But the truth is that there are a ton of those programs. They just focus on giving you less fat and overall intake. If each and every American watched what he or she ate, the weight average would significantly drop, and at the same time, multiple restaurants (BK, McDonalds, KFC) would close. Also if more Americans did some exercise the amount of heart disease and weight level would drop.

The bottom line is that YES America and Americans have gotten out of hand. The weight levels are huge, and unreasonable, seeing as how it is not difficult to lose weight. All America needs is a bit of motivation, and a push in the right direction. Not forcing the good habits into your lifestyle all at once is also important, but increasing the healthy aspects in your life gradually will do a lot of good and will increase your overall lifespan.

I believe that over-eating is a big issue in America. Many Americans are overweight. But, everyone seems to think it is America. It is, but that is because many of our cities are far apart from each other (ie. Beverly Hills & Birmingham). In Europe, you live in the city, or walking distance to the outside of the city. Most people in Europe own 1 car per a 4 or 5 person family.

There are many healthy ways to start a good lifestyle. Exercise (Get off the couch!). Exercising regularly will get you in shape, stronger, and fit. Go to a daily or bi-daily exercise class, join a sports team, walk or bike instead of driving, & don't eat fast-food. Fast-food is probably the worst things you can put in to your body. They have tons of fat, and are not good for you to digest.

Personally, I don't believe in diets (Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers). They make you watch what you eating, not eat things that your body needs and write down in a book, etc. I believe people shouldn't turn to these diets that make you not eat things that your body needs. People should just go and exercise, and stop being irresponsible about what you eat from day to day.

Also, teens and kids shouldn't move to diets. Kids and teens body's are growing and changing. Younger people need to get exercise, instead of saying I can get fat and go to this diet and lose a ton of weight.

One other thing before I am done. The kids and teens of today seem to be more concerned about weight. People look at themselves and think they are very overweight, but really aren't. Then they go on these diets. Same reason why the emerging crowd of teens and kids is even more anorexic and bulimic than ever before.

I personally think that being over-weight is a problem in america. Many people are obease in our country. Think about it, you cant go a mile without running into a micky d's or a burger king these days, how could anyone be really healthy. Obviously not all of america is fat or overweight, but many have the impulse and cannot help themselves. America's overkill style leads its citizens to over-do everything, and many lead to over-eating. I saw the movie super size me and it showed how fat our country really is. It made me sick to see how many kids are unknowingly getting fat by eating fast food. I think that education on eating healthy and being not skinny nor fat, is something that should be in schools. Overall, obeasity is deffinately an issue in america and it is getting worse and worse.

I think that the fact that the United States is so over weight is like what Nicole said - the number of fast food places in America. The fact that every other country is not nearly as over weight as we are shows that fast food is the reason. Other countries do not have nearly as many fast food restaurants as we do. Manhattan alone has 81 McDonalds in it, and that is noot including the other fast food places. Also, we are getting lazier and lazier, we buy more cars to do our lazy work, just today, I saw someone drive their car to the end of the driveway to get the mail out of their mailbox. This is ridiculous. We need to get up and get out there America!! I am not saying that everyone is doing this but i am saying that many people do not do physical activity at all or try to avoid it.

I believe that most people have forgotten what they really want when it comes to eating. Girls with a perfect athletic build look at these magazines filled with skinny girls and become enorexic or bulimic just because the pictures in the media are so sick these days. Every model these days is either doing drugs or starving herself which is not the way to go in order to be beautiful. I believe that everyone should exersize and that way you can eat whatever you want. That doesnt mean eat only junk food all the time as long as you play a sport. One has to try to fit in most of the pyramid into each day's worth of meals. No one should have to starve themselves to look beautiful.
ps/ great topic josh!

Overeating has become and is becoming a lager issue as we speak. I think that it’s due to the fact that people don’t set limits for themselves and don’t know when to stop eating. Over the years we as Americans have gotten much lazier. We tend to take things for granted and we forget about the most important issue that will be affected later on in life, our health. Instead of walking to the local gas station or a restaurant on a hot day, kids will now do anything to find a ride. Many people also eat way too much fast-food, including me. It is probably the worst food and meat you could eat.

Weight Watchers is a great idea for people who are looking to lose weight. They actually have really good food and I eat their muffins all the time. Although being on a diet is not going to shed the pounds, you must be willing to work at it. If you have the determination anything is possible.

J Finn-
I think that your decision to go on weight watchers is a great decision. Not only will it make you feel like you have lost weight, but it will make you feel like a brand new person. I think that if you were to not only go on weight watchers but get a personal trainer, or just work out at your will, you will see a huge difference.

I do think that eating too much is a big issue in America. (This is for the common person, because some people, athletes, or just fit persons have to eat a lot more than others to maintain their diet.) I do think that America is overweight. As Nicole said, obesity is an economic issue. As people get 'fatter', the corporations get richer.

A way to start a good lifestyle is, as I explained in the first paragraph, work out. You may have heard that working out makes you all sweaty, tired, and not want to do anything after, but don't give into all of the hype. My experiences taught me that working out helps boost my physical, social, and emotional health. I think that this change of lifestyle (at least I think its a change for you) for you will make your life a lot better.
