Effects of stereotypes?

In Excel, we learned about how men and women are portrayed in the media. Through the videos we saw, we were able to learn that women are made out to be sensual in the ads in order to help sell their products, and that they are usually showing off their bodies, which has a negative effect on children today. In the movie “Tough Guise”, we saw how men are supposed to be tough and gain respect through violence and intimidation, as the media portrays "true" men as strong and buff.

My question for you is this. What is your view on men and women that are being portrayed in the media, and how do you think we can change the way that men and women are shown in the media? What kind of effect do these stereotypes have on the next generation?

I think men and women are portrayed differently in the media then they really are. Women are portrayed in a way that shows off thier bodies and they are positioned in a provocative way. Most women in society are not like that, but the people behind those photos make it seem that way. And men in today's society are tough, and try to act tough, yes, but at the same time not all guys are getting into fights and trying to act intimidating. But not all guys act like that. I think that the people behind these images and that force these ideas upon us are just trying to sell their product because sex sells.
I think we can change things by changing the way our generation acts. Teenagers are the most influential people of our time, in my opinion. And i think that if we change the way we act when we are out, then we can change the way society viwes us. And i think that the next generation will start acting in a provocative manner much younger than they should be. Younger girls and boys will start thinking that thats how they are supposed to act, when the reality is, is that not many people really do act like that. So i think that our generation needs to do as much as we can to change the views of our society.

I agree that men and women are portrayed poorly in the media. The media has its own thoughts on how women should look and their standards are set to high. I like the way Dove is having normal women pose, it helps girls to be more excepting of others and of themselves.

In the eyes of the media I can understand why they always have half naked women posing for sunglasses, it’s because young minds will want to be like them and viewers like to see models. They make girls feel bad about themselves for money, I do not think they do it on purpose but they are doing it. This is a big problem and it needs to change.
