We started reading The Crucible today, what are you initial reactions to the book after reading Act One? And do you think [the situation it portrays] is another example of history repeating itself? If so, what event do you think it was repeating?

My initial reaction was shock. I can't believe how easy it was for the people of Salem to just jump on the band wagon and start accusing people of witchcraft. I definitely think that history repeats itself. Unfortunately the Salem Witch Trials were not the only offences against innocent people in history. This also happened in the Holocaust where the Jews were wrongfully accused and used as scapegoats, it also happened when Americans put Japanese people into internment camps after Pearl Harbor happened, and even today, Americans are prejudice against anybody of middle eastern decent and accuse them of being terrorists. As much as we deny it, history does repeat itself and it is our job to try to stop it and make sure that we do not just follow the crowd and that we do stand up for what we believe in and know is right.
At the end of the novel, I think Abigail will get her way and Elizabeth will be accused of being a witch and then she will be mad that even after what she thought was the right thing to do, John will not be with her.

I believe that history has repeated, and will repeat itself tremendously. During the red scare in the 20th century, the holocaust, the japanese internment camps and countless other hateful situations, history has repeated itself. The Red Scare of communism in america is the most relative to the crucible. It had close relation to the salem witch trials which we are learning about in the crucible. The crucible to me is a boring book. The only reason to stay attent in my mind is to see the relation to the red scare of communism that occured in america. I personally am astonished by the events in the crucible. If the situations in this story were in modern day they would simply just be considered moronic. I guess that people were naive 400 years ago. I really have no assumption for the books ending other than that many people are inprisoned and finally the town sees how dumb and pointless it is to accuse someone of being a witch.
