Manly Men - what's up w/ that?

This week we started to learn about Ernest Hemingway and his style of writing. He wrote about tough masculine prose. His characters were fishermen, hunters, and soldiers that were hard drinkers and involved in sports or crime. He wrote about all his life experiences.

Do you like his style of writing? Why do you think he writes about manly men? Is he trying to over compensate for his lack of manliness?

I really like Hemingway's writing style. I am a very short and to the point person, at least for the most part, and I really enjoy his writing. I personally hate when authors go on and on about the most irrelevant things and just describe and describe it gets really annoying to me after a while. I do agree with the theory that his obsession with making his characters manly men is to make up for the fact that his mother dressed him up in pink dresses until he was six. Also, I think he wants to show what he thinks is the ultimate man, and what he admired about his own father. There may be other reasons and it could be just a coincidence, but I really think that this is one of, if not the only reason, as to why he writes this way.

I think Hemingway is trying to hide is lack of manilness. I like his writing because i get to draw conclusions and i can make my own ending, but i do not like how he always mentions bar's, sports, and crimes. I seem's like he try's to come across to us as confident, but in reality he is not. He try's to hard to be manly. Other than that i really like his writing. I like how he uses the ice berg style.

I think that his style isnt the best, but isnt the worst either. Hes jsut trying to show himself through the masculine charecters, and show how tough he himself is. I think that he is not the ideal author because hes using his stories to show how strong he is, andto show off his power, yet there is an element of wonder added to all his stories, making them more interesting and readable.

I enjoy Hemingway's writing style. I like that he writes short stories. The advantage to this is that their are easier to read. I also like that he leaves things for discussion because it lets you use your imagination and guess what he is aiming for. I think the reason that he writes about manly men is because naturally writers and authors are portrayed as wimps so he tries to show that this stereotype is not true to him.

Personally, I enjoy Hemingway's style of writing. He is straight forward and there isn't a bunch of extra words to make you see what is happening. The way he writes is so concise and so "tough" that it helps you to visualize what Hemingway wants you to see instead of what you want to see. I think that Hemingway writes about manly men because that is what he knows. Whether he knows about them from being one or being "with" them, we will never know.

I really admire his style of writing because most of it goes over peoples heads and makes them think. I think that this means he is really smart and their are many layers to him to be able to write such deep pieces. I said this in class and I still think it...I belive he wants to prove he is a manly-man because wirters have a certain stereotype about them and I belive he wants to escape from that. I belive that he is self-counciouse about this and feels the need to prove his masculininty.

I find Hemingway's writting too repetivite. I enjoy his writting, but I seem to only in small doses. I also think that it is wierd that Hemingway writes so much about the "manly man" because usually intelectual types do not mostly enjoy killing and hunting. I think that Hemingway feels that he is not manly enough and needs to compensate for himself I find it quite peculiar also how he write about misfortune and death so much. His writing seems to, in most cases, mirror his own life.

For the most part, I enjoy Hemingway's writing style. I like how it's just short and straight to the point. However, he is very repetative in throughout many of his stories. I think one of the main reasons why Hemingway writes about manly men all the time was because of his mother as well as his father. Hemingway's mom had him in little girl's dresses while growing up. I think that he wanted to make up for that girliness in his writing. Also, since he admired his dad so much, I believe that all his manly stories relate to his dad. Hemingway loved how strong and tough his dad was. They would spend a lot of their time outdoors, bonding. So I think both of Hemingway's parents contributed to his writing.

I personally like Ernest Hemingway's writing style. I think it is very unigue and somethins I have not seen before. I like how is writing was right to the point. Sometimes I would like a little more detail, or more description than Hemingway is giving his reader's. But at the same time I don't like when writers go on and on about something because then I loose interest in what I'm reading.
I think that Hemingway is writing about rough or manly men because he wasn't like that. I think that when he was young, and having his mother puch religion and schooling on him, really had an affect on what he did as a child. So I think that because he didn't do all of those outdoor activities most young boys do, he wanted his characters toexperience that. So I think that in his writing he is experiencing all of these activities through his characters that he writes about in his short stories or novels.
