Which poem is your favorite?

Since we have been studying the Harlem Renaissance we have been reading and discussing a lot of poems. I have liked most of the poems that we have read but there are a few that really stand out to me. My top two poems out of the ones we have read are "Dream Deferred" and "Jazzonia". Personally I liked the message for Dream Deferred that you should never forget about your dreams. I also liked "Jazzonia" because of the rhythm it had to it. The poem just flowed with the beat it had to it.

I also like Dream Deferred and Jazzonia. I like Dream Deferred because there are so many similies and it is very different from the other poems. I also liked Cross because it ended with a question and it makes the reader feel what the narrorator of the poem felt at the time. I thought that the narrorator had a white father and an African American mother, but thats how i interperated it when i first read the poem but there are many different interpertations of the poem.

Some of my favorite poems about the Harlem Renaissance that we have read are "Dreams Differed" and "I,too." I like "Dreams Differed" because it has a good meaning to it. Its meaning is to not forget about your dreams even if you haven't achieved them. Also I like the poem "I, Too" because it has a good meaning behind it. The theme of the poem is that everyone should be treated equally. I really like these two poem becuase of there meanings.

Yeah, I really liked Jazzonia too.

My favorite poem, though, was definately Creation. I thought that it was beautifully written and the imagery was so vivid. Also, I think that because it is on such a controversial topic it can be interpreted in many different ways, much like the actual creation story in Genesis.

One of my favorites was "Cross." I like when poems are short- if a writer is able to get his point across in few words, I think that that says a lot about his writing style than if the writer needs three pages of weak words to make his point. To me, poems are way more powerful if they are short and to the point and if they make you think. "Cross" had a very interesting point of view and I really liked the rhythm.

I also liked "Saturday's Child." This was also pretty short and to the point, and I liked the rhythm again. I don't usually like a lot of figurative language in writing; it is useful and descriptive to a point, yet I hate being overloaded with metaphors, etc. However, I thought the figurative language in this poem was interesting and effective.

My top two poems that were discussing would be "Dreams Differed" and "I, too”. I really enjoyed writing our won “I, too” poem. I also agree with Siobhan in the meaning behind “Dreams Differed”, that you should never forget the ideas that inspire you. I think that we should write another poem based off another poet. I thought that was fun to do and see how to write in different styles. I liked how the poems had their own personal style and I thought that theses stood out to me.

Hey Excellers,
So all of these poems that we are reading are reall great and really depict the time period. My personal favorite had to be Cross. This is a poem, writen by Langston Hughes, about his struggle to be defined as either white or black. I can personally understand his confusion and therfore the poem is very personal.

My second favorite poem had to be Creation. I loved the vivid pictures that were placed in my head because of the discriptions...

Thats all-

I liked Dream Deferred and Jazzonia, but I also liked Cross. I liked it because it showed the confusion of theis half black half white man and how he doesn't know which race he belongs to. It also shows how he respects his parents for having an interracial relationship during such a racist time period.
