So, we watched Newsies this week and not only is it the best movie ever, but it has some similarities to some of the things we learned earlier this year. During the Gilded Age, many business tycoons would try to out do their competition, in Newsies Pulitzer was trying to “out-do” Hearst’s paper, and this is what started the strike. Later in the year we learned about the unions and the strikes and that is what the newsboys were doing. Yellow journalism was when the news papers would “improve the truth” to make their stories more appealing and that was also a main part of the movie. These were the similarities I saw, did any of you see any others?

I got so happy when I saw this blog. A chance to talk about the AMAZING Newsies. Then I got really sad when I saw that Alex had gotten all the points...good job. I think that this movie is a perfect depiction of the time. In the move, Pulitzer hiked up the price of papers which made it harder for the Newsies to buy and ultimally sell. Their strike was another good example of unions organizing...(remember, they were a union just by sayin' so!). A really good example of yellow journalism was when they would sell the papers on the streets by using obsene titles, mostly untrue. When the real headline read, Coal Miners Go On Strike, the Newsies would sell the papers with a headline of a three-headed baby. That was yellow journalisam at its best!
Well thats all...I say we watch it again, to see if we can find any other parellels?

Definately the best movie of excel 10A, possibly ever. Alyssa made a really good note with the newsies doing the yellow journalism, i didn't even make that connection. Another thing i saw was that most of the newsies lived together in the orphanage and Jack's parents had left/died/been imprisoned. I did my I-search on the Orphan Trains and Jack's and the other boy's cases were similar to those of the kids who rode the orphan trains. Also the strike in the beginning-ish of the movie for the coal miners how they had like flames and stampedes and people getting intense and hurt and all, that was similar to a lot that we talked about with the Haymarket incident.
