The Harlem Renaissance

Hey everyone! In class, we have just started learning about the Harlem Renaissance. It is very interesting to learn about all of the writers and artists that were a result of the time period. I don't know about you guys, but I personally like learning and reading about the musicians of the time period. I don't reguraly listen to jazz or anything, but I like the music and I think the songs and musicians of the time were very unique. It is really sad that because of the depression all of the prosperity and joy of the Harlem area was lost. At least today it is still remembered and studied by people of colors and ages of all!

Yeah, I really like learning about the jazz artists too. In seventh grade, my teacher loved jazz and he split us up into groups and gave us each a jazz artist to do a powerpoint on, then we had to take a camera and go into Birmingham and find people and ask them questions about jazz artists. At first I thought it was stupid, but then I got really interested in it and learned a lot. It was also a lot of fun. When we read that article on the Harlem Renaissance I knew all the artists mentioned and it kept my interest instead of just reading a list of names that I would just forget right away.

This was one of my favorite things to learn about this year. I loved learning all about Harlem and the amazing artists that came from that area. I agree that it was sad that the depression took away the joy, but after the depression it was all brought back, and their songs were being composed.

I also think that the musicains were my favorite part of the Harlem Renaissance. Becuase of the evolution of blues and jazz during this time period, we have the rock and roll we all listen to toady. Many of the blues and jazz artists of the harlem Rennaissance are some of my favorits, including people like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and many other musicains that evolved in their style, like Maynard Fergusson and B.B king. I enjoy the musical stylings of this era.
