Brittany on Wright's Writing Style

Did you know that Black Boy is about Richard Wright's own life? Well it is!

I think Black Boy is one of the best books we've read in this class. It is really interesting and grabs your attention right away. On the second page of the story, Richard is already burning down the house!

Richard Wright's style of writing is realism. He writes through his own point of view. Another thing that was really interesting was that in the first chapter they killed a cat by tying a rope around its neck and hanging it from a tree... just like lynching. Richard Wright writes about more realistic things, unlike Hemingway who writes more of a modernistic way. Hemingway's take on the world is a lot different than Richard Wright. Do you like Richard Wright's style of writing?

I agree with Hannah and Brittany, I also really like the book and i agree with the hanging of the cat and lynching situation. I thought it was terrible how Richard had to get drunk when he was only 6 in order to get some money to feed himself and it was worse how the men and women would make him say inapropriate stuff and he would walk on the streets saying them drunk. As I read on I realized that the inappropriate sayings came back to him without him realizing it when he moved to his grandmothers house. That scene makes me realize what the African Americans had to face in order to fill their stomaches.

Hey
so far i really like Black Boy. I love the way it grabs you right at the start. I think that is important when writing. I also think that its cool that he takes African American history and makes it funny and lets you connect to your childhood. To neha i feel the same way when about him getting drunk at 6, thats crazy!! Anyways,I cant wait to read the rest of the book

this book is a really good book compared to other one's we have read so far this year. for the most part i like Wright's writting style. it grabs your attention and makes you want to keep reading, for me at least, i think after a while you kind of get sick of his writting style because he gets too in depth and i get a little over confused if you know what im saying. i also agree with the cat thing, its very symbolic towards the hangings.
good question britt.
