1st Semester Evaluation -Part 1

Now that the first semester is over, it's time to evaluate what we've accomplished. In the next few posts, you'll be asked to comment reflectively and honestly about your learning and your effort in Excel this semester.

In this quote, evaluate the videos that we have seen (10 for the best possible video - 1 for the worst possible video). Rate all the videos with a number between 1-10 and pick any two and write a short paragraph about why you liked and/or disliked them.

Choose from the list (excerpts or full segments):
WW1 + Treaty Inherit the Wind Norma Rae
Newsies Teddy Roosevelt bio Supersize Me
2 art movies Walt Whitman bio Ulysses Grant bio
Robber Barons - Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan
Frontier House Hemingway bio Prohibition - Dry Crusade
New York videos Potions and Poisons The Others

I give Inherit the Wind a rating of about 4 because we barely watched any of it and it had false facts. Norma Rae was a 7 on the rating scale because it was factual and fun to watch. Newsies was a 10 because i wasnt expecting to watch it and it was really good. Frontier House was a 10 because it was very interesting and funny. All of the educational videos that werent movies with actors get a 4 and below. They were really boring and hard to watch.

My two favorite videos were Newsies and Supersize Me. I liked Newsies because it had a good semi-interesting plot line. It also had some sweet music that was catchy. My second choice was Supersize Me. I liked that movie because there was good looking food in it. Also, it was interesting to read about some of the tactics that McDonalds and other companies use to draw the customer in. But I liked that movie mostly because it made me hungry for all of its good looking food.

I really didn't like the art movies because they didn't relly go into any exciting things that interested me. Other videos talked about wars and corrupt business men, but this was just an english guy talking about art.

I really liked Newsies because its the best movie ever. It is entertaining and it has some educational value. It made learning fun. Yay for learning!

I thought that the movies were very helpful. Movies are a good break from normal class. Somtimes the movies were a little boring, but for the most part I liked them. My favorite movies were the ones by the history channel, and the hollywood movies like Norma Rae and Supersize me. The bigoraphy movies, like the ones on hemmingway and teh robber barons were also very informative. My favorite movie was the Others, i t was a good finish ot the scary story elective. I really liked watching movies in Excel. I also liked the couch

I thought out of all the movies we watched Newsies and The Others were the best. Newsies was very entertaining and also educational. It portrayed history through song and dance.

The others was the other great movie we watched. It was a thriller movie was all the aspects of a scary movie.

My two favorite videos were Supersize Me and Inherit the Wind. I thought that Supersize Me was very interesting and funny, and I learned a lot because of how informative it was. It made me kind of sick, though. Inherit the Wind was also very good because it was well written and captivating, and was fun to watch. It also taught me a lot about the Scopes trial.

The Newsies:
This movie was my favorite out of all the movies that we watched. One reason why I liked it so much was becuase it wasn't boring. It kept me interested in the topic. Another reason is becuase I could see how the time period really affected people's lives who lived back then. Instead of just reading about it, or watching a documentary, it was a fun way to learn about the time period. Not only did we learn about the issues that were going on, but you got to learn about what they wore, and other things like culture.

Supersize Me:
I liked Supersize me becuase it was funny. This movie didn't want to make me fall asleep and I felt like I acutally learned something from it. Even though the food we eat today isn't as gross as the meat and stuff we learned about in "The Jungle", it is still pretty gross to learn about what we're really eating and how much we don't really know about how it's prepared.

I liked Inherit the Wind because the drama that the lawyers added really helped me understand what was going on. The defense attourney really went into detail when he was questioning the prosecutor and it helped how he went into the Bible and used that to strengthen the views of both sides. The people in the audience of the court really helped to personify the feelings of the time and enabled me to look at the different viewpoints.
I liked Supersize Me because it went well with the curriculum that we were learning but also enabled me to apply it to modern day. Because we were learning about The Jungle and the meatpacking industry and because we also saw Potions and Poisons I was able to make connection with how the people had felt back then once they found out all of this information. It was like having a connection with them through the nausea in my stomach. Supersize me was also very informative and definately shone a light at me to look at what all is really going on and to see how disgusting it all is.

The two movies that i liked the ebst would have to be Newsies and Super Size Me. I am sure that many people will be putting these also, but i truly did like them. I loved Newsies i because i am a sucker for musicals and because it was a new kind of movie and mixed it up a little. I also liked it because it fit so well with what we were learning.

Super Size Me was a great movie because it was funny, serious, and discusting all at the same time. I liked how he went through hell, pretty much, and it was still funny. It gave quick facts and good examples of what is good for you to eat while still tying in with the novel "The Jungle"

Out of the movies that we have watched in the first semester my favoirte one would have to be "Supersize Me." The reason that i liked this movies was because it was interesting to see how much weight someone could gain if they ate fast food 3 times a day.

My least favoirte movie out of the ones that we have watched druing first semester is the art movies that we watched. The reason i dont like it is because i am not iterested in art and i do not find it fascinating. I think that it is boaring to look at art and see what it looked like in the earlier years.

Even though The Others was not that scary, it still had some jumpy parts and kept you at the edge of your seat.

I think that the Newsies was a really entertaining and knowledgable movie. which allowed me to see what yellow journalism was really like. the main character protrayed how to fight back to the owners of the newspapers who were trying to get more money from the newsies.
I didn't really like the art videos because they were really boring and i didn't like how art was portrayed in the videos. They didn't really seem to influence me towards art because most of the artists seemed to be depressed.

Yeah so I loved basically all the movies in Excel...most of the time. In most classes you dream of watching a movie. In Excel we watched movies all the time. At first it was cool but then eventually you would hear a groan when we knew that a movie was awaiting our near future. Now that I think about it...I loved to watch movies and I wouldnt trade them in for all the learning in the world!
Movie Ratings...
10+ NEWSIES!!!!!- This movie was amazing. I had already seen it but it was actually really cool applying all the movie-ness into what we were learing in class.

The Newsies was my favorite of all the movie we watched in class because it mixed the power of the news boys with fun singing and dancing. This movie has always been a favorite of mine before we watched it in class so i guess that would be an other reason of why i liked it so much.

The Hemingway bio was not one of my favortie movies. I felt like it was hard to watch because it was so plain. The guys voice kinda put me to sleep and didn't make me want to watch it or hear what he was saying. I think that if it was remade that i would have learned more and liked it better.

First semester i had Mr. Sherman for U.S History, and Mr. McClaren for English.
In English the movies we watched were:
The Crucible, I thought was an okay movie. It showed me how much leing could get you in trouble. Also that you should always stand up for what you believe in. Overall i thought the movie was kind of slow, and it was hard for me to get into it.
The Great Gatsby, i liked this movie alot. It showed me how much people depended on money, thinking their life would be better because of it. Nick Carroway in the book showed me how, money isn't everything if you don't have the people you love to share it with. Overall i thought it was a great movie.
In Mr. Sherman's class we watched, Robber barons biography and, All quiet on the western front.
Both movies i thought weren't that great. It was intersting to know how the robber barons worked to get all their money though. For All quiet on the western front, i couldn't get into it at all, and didn't like the movie.

I disliked a movie i watched about the 20's because it was educational and made no attempt to be interesting but was just a boring narrator and a boring theme.

Inherit the Wind--
This was my favorite thing to watch. It was a very good movie that reminded me of my favorite, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Both men were fighting for something that they believed in and trying to make their point. At the end, both had a dramatic finish by passing out after they fought as much as they could. I think that we should watch Mr. Smith Goes to Washington because it is right before WWII, and it covers political machines.

Art Movies--
I liked these two movies, but they were a little boring. The best part of the movie was learning about Georgia O'Keefe and how her art affected women and people everywhere. I didn't think that the movie was exciting and it only focused in on a few artists.

I liked the Teddy Roosevelt movie because I like Teddy Roosevelt. The fact that he ran a family and the country means something, especially with all the kids he had. I like how the movie showed his way of life inside the working part and outside with his family playing with them and talking with them.

The movie that I most disliked was the art movies. I thought the movie wsa boring and to me it seemed like they only picked the sad and depressed artists and not some of the cool art from others. It seemed like they were zoomed in on one particullar kind of art.

One of my favorite movies that we watched was the Frontier House. I think it gave the class a great outlook on what happened in the 1800's. It was unlike anything that I have ever watched or seen before. It was definitly cool watching how characters responded to all the hardships of the frontier life. For example: the cattle, money, and food. This movie also went really well with what we were learning in class. This show i would probabally watch outside of class.

Another great movie was, Supersize Me. It gave us a great look into the problems that Americans are facing everyday. I personally thought that the movie was very disturbing but at the same time educational. This movie really impacted me, and made me think about what I am intaking. I hope it changed other peoples perceptives too.

Supersize Me was an entertaining movie, but it also connected to what we were learning in class. The movie was a good example of how poor food preparing/handling is still in restaruants and food factories today. I learned about the connection between Supersize Me and The Jungle. I also liked this movie because it was something I could relate to becuase learning about the negative aspects of McDonalds actually effects my life.

Frontier House was a great way to learn about what living in the West during the 1800s was really like. Showing present day people in that situation was a great example of how different life is today. I learned a lot about the work that was required to survive and difficult life could be. It was interesting to see how one persons mistake could effect a whole community.

Supersize Me
This was an entertaining movie, and it was very enjoyable. It was a good movie because it was very interesting/funny but still connected to what we were learning. It put the topic into perspective while still being fun. I learned a lot about the terrible preparation/production of fast food, connecting it back to the issues presented in The Jungle. I also enjoyed this movie because I could relate it to today; it actually affected my life today.

Frontier House
This series was an excellent example of the frontier life we were learning about. I never really comprehended how hard life must have been until seeing this. I was able to connect real circumstances to the hardships, fully understanding the trials of frontier families. I was surprised how much one small decision could affect the entire family's life drastically; the movie definately put the differences of frontier life from today's life into perspective.

I liked Inherit the Wind because it showed a trial that really took place. It showed what people's beliefs were back then and what was frowned upon. I just thought it was interesting and I really got into it. I didnt like the art movies because it just seemed like a narrator was rambling on and on and boring movies are really hard to pay attention to. Newsies, on the other hand, was one of my favorite movies already, and because it has a back story to it, that just makes it more interesting and easier to learn about the history that's in it.

My favorite movie was definately The Others. In my opinion, itwas a really well-made, eerie movie. It was also very relevant to what we were learning about at the time, which was what scares us. It was fun to be able to sit in the dark auditorium and enjoy a perfect example of what we had been studying so intensely.

My least favorite movie was the one about WW1 and the Treaty of Versailles. I thought that it was really monotonous and long. Also, I don't feel like I got that much out of it. It was confusing and hard to follow. I felt like it was just kind of listing the events that happened instead of making it understandable to a school-aged audience.

The Newsies was a good movie because it showed what people had to do to get money and help support their families. It also displayed how the robber barons had all the control until someone stood up to them. I liked the movies plot but I really disliked how they would bust out into a song randomly. But overall, it was a good film and I would recommend it to other viewers.

Supersize me- I really enjoyed this movie because it showed how the fast food we eat is not just making us full but its hurting us. These foods just keep getting unhealthier and unhealthier. I like how Morgan did this documentary and how he jeopardized his own health to make his point. He was in perfect health and at the end he almost had his kidney fail. This proves that McDonalds gives more than the occasional McTummy ache. I also liked the experiments he did during the documentary. For example: when he put the food in the jars and the fries still looked appetizing while the big n tasty had some kind of fur growing on it. Overall, I liked the movie and we should watch more movies like this particular one.

Thanks,
Mike

The Others
We watched The Others during our scary story elective. It was a fun movie, but it also made us think. While watching the movie I wasn't sure if the people living in the house were dead or alive. After it was over I realized that they were dead, but they dind't realize it. Over all I thought it was a good movie.

Newsies
Newsies was also a very good movie. It was a musical and it was about how the people who owned the news papers raised the price for the Newsies. The Newsies went on strike and wouldn't sell any news papers. I liked this movie a lot because it had a lot of dancing and some good music.

Well obviously i liked The Others because it was intense and exillerating. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. i know i sound stupid saying that but it actaully did and i was continually wanting to know what was going to happenning next.

My take on Newsies is even though it is a musical, it is very irratating to always have to watch then all of a sudden break out in song. This just drives me crazy for some reason and wish they would just continue the movie instead of always having to listen to songs. Besides being a musical though it was overall a good movie with a good story line besides the also cheesy accents of the actors. However the constand singing made me drop the rating down to a 3.

Supersize Me-This has to be one of the greatest biographies i have ever seen. Not only is it entertaining but it is very informational. It truly shows how changing your diet to something Americans go to everyday can be very bad for you and cause many health problems many people face daily. The nutritional value of fast food is rediculously bad and something should be done to reduce this. Still after seeing this movie, i continue to adore eating any fast food. We should continue to watch movies like these.

My two favorite movies that we watched were The OThers and Supersize ME. I had seen The OThers before hand, but it was fun to watch it in the audortium together. I understood it more after our elective meetings because it made me think of more things in the movie. I also thought that Supersize ME was a very good movie. I had herd about it before but I had never seen it. So I liked that we had learned about muckrakers and Supersize ME was a present day muckraker. ONe of the worst movies was the Teddy Roosevelt Bio, I thought that it was slow moving and it didn't keep my interest. Maybe there is a different movie that could be shown next year.
