Thoughts on Intervention in Darfur

Hey everyone!

Recently we have been learning about Darfur. As we learned about it, it reminded me of Rwanda and the Holocaust. In these genocides, the American government (along with the UN and other countries) hasn't done anything to help until the very end. Even though Darfur hasn't asked for help doesn't mean that we shouldn't do anything anyway.

So my questions are,
1. Do you think that the government will do something about Darfur? And what?
2. What would the economic effects be, here at home along with the war in Iraq?

Leave your thoughts

Maggie,

Good questions. At the talk yesterday, Jane Fuerst asked some great questions about American intervention and what next. I believe she asked something to the effect, o.k., we intervene, we protect the Darfur region. But, the gov't. in Khartoum is still in place. To make any real lasting change like our speaker was talking about, that government HAS to be replaced. Then that's a whole other ball game we're looking at, and that is something the U.S. cannot do alone.

That would be why President Bush is calling on Europe and Africa to do more in this situation. Sudan needs to be rebuilt from the ground-up, and hopefully, everyone can learn from Somalia in 1993 about what not to do when rebuilding a country.

It's nice that President Bush is asking Europe and Africa to do more about Darfur, but unfortunately I think that the US might have to step in at one point. I think that the president should take a step back from what's going on in the middle east and look at the big picture. We need to stop spending so much money there and start to work with other countries to re-build Khartoum's government.

Realistically, if we won't...who will?

I understand that, like Jill and Mr. Wickersham said, President Bush is trying to get help from Africa and Europe to do something about Darfur, but I feel that it is not enough. Our government really isn't doing anything more that doesn't help the situation at all. Even though we are fighting with Iraq, this situation in Darfur started before all this stuff was going on with the terrorist attacks and the war. I think that our time and effort could be put to better use helping other countries like Darfur because it is not the only one with problems with genocides. I feel that we should help other countries in Africa before that get as bad as Darfur.

I think personally, if the US goes into to darfur it will take much longer than it should be. America is putting this on the side now, so why would they stop. Great, high schools make money to save darfur, but unless we get the government to pay attention and do something our letters being sent to the president does not do enough. So i belive that the US will not go into darfur, but if they do it will not be anytime soon.
This will affect the economy because we will have to help send supplies and troops there, which costs money, and we will maybe have to pull some troops out of iraq, which makes it more unlikely for this to happen.
