Dan asks about "Hills Like White Elephants"

In the story "Hills Like White Elephants" the man and woman, husband and wife, are not sure whether or not to have an abortion. The couple enjoy, and frequently travel around the world. The woman is pregnant and needs to make a choice, on one hand she would like to have the child and settle down, on the other she knows that if she decides to go through with the baby, the expeditions would need to come to an end.

In this case do you think it is acceptable to have an abortion?

I definitely do not think that abortion is acceptable in this case. The woman and her husband chose to take a risk, and are now facing the consequences. I believe that abortion is only acceptable when someone has been raped, or in another severe situation. I understand that the abortion may help the couple's relationship, but think about it this way...if their relationship falls apart after a baby, they never really loved each other and aren't meant to be together in the first place. They are also scared that their lives will change and I understand how scary that is, but life is supposed to change, thats the beauty of it.

I have always been pro choice in certain cercumstances. An example of when it is acceptable to me is in the case of rape. In this case I really dont think it is accaptable int his case...if they didnt want a baby, they should have been more careful. I understand that they are scared of the change but it will most likely pull them together and couples with children are more likely to stay together...if thats what they want.

I believe that in this situation they should have the baby. I can understand if she was raped or the baby was going to be born with a fatal disease. They were able to have and support the baby and they just didnt want to slow down their lives and have the responsibility of a baby. This is not right. Even if they were not planning on having a baby, it is their fault and they should not just not have it because it would be an inconvenience. Abortion should not be used as a way to get out of a responsibility unless the baby was forced upon someone by rape.

In this particular case, I am not going to say she should or should not. It was her fault she became entangled in this mess. If she wants to own up to what she has done, she should choose to keep the child. If she wants to slide her mistake under the rug and move on with her life, an abortion seems likely. The real question is why she let herself become the victim of this heart-wrenching decision. On the one hand, if she had the baby, the guilt would melt away, but the strenuous responsibility of caring for it would not. If she takes the easy way out and has an abortion, her burden would disappear, but not the guilt that she would feel for giving up her kid.

The Hills Like White ELephants was one of my favorite stories that Hemingway wrote but it was confusing to understand. I really dont think that she should have a abortion, but if she isn't ready than she shouldn't. The abortion may help their relationship, but she will still have to go through pain either way. I believe they should take some time for themselves before they go through this sitaution.

I don't think that it would be acceptable to have an abortion in this case. i think that the only way someone should be able to have an abortion would be because of medical issues or if they could not be able to take care of it. in this case the parents dont want to have it because the wouldn't be able to travel anymore. but even thats not true, because once the child is older the would be able to start again. in my family we travel all over and find new fun places to ski. that is why i find it wrong to have an abortion in this case.

i think that no matter how horrible it is to take away a humand life, every woman should have a choice. Even though in this case she needs to take on the responsibility of always having too much fun, its still up to her. The child is created and mothered inside the woumb, so it should be completely up to her to decide on whether or not she wants to have it. No matter how much people fight for the rights, when its them thats put into the position, the view point will always change.
